During the Bass Camp in 2016, we had the opportunity to talk extensively with the Warwick artists. All interviews were conducted by Nick Wells from Great Britain and recorded by the Warwick video team at the Warwick Headquarters in Markneukirchen.
Tetsuo Sakurai – Bass Camp 2016 Video Interview
Today’s guest is bass player and Warwick artist Tetsuo Sakurai from Japan.
Tetsuo is particularly popular in Japan and has been active since the late 1970s in the Japanese jazz-fusion band Casiopea, with whom he has already published 20 albums. Since the late ’80s, he has also released some solo albums and is currently performing mainly as a solo artist, often supported by famous guest musicians. For example he produced a live DVD entitled ‘Gentle Hearts Live’ (2004) together with Dennis Chambers.
In the 80s, Tetsuo Sakurai switched from 4-string basses to 5-string basses, in order to benefit from a greater tonal range. In this way, he played alternately two variations – 5-string basses with an additional deep B and those with an additional high C. For understandable reasons, Tetsuo later enriched his equipment with 6-string basses.
About six years ago, Tetsuo discovered Warwick basses and amps, which he now uses exclusively. He especially loves the Warwick Infinity design. In 2016, Warwick therefore made two Custom Shop Masterbuilt Infinity basses for him.
